Another successfully concluded activity within the project "Alumni Encouraging Volunteering and Extracurricular Activities," supported by the U.S. Embassy. On November 28th and 29th, 2023, under the mentorship and organization of our MAAA alumna Prof. Dr. Tatjana Ruškovska, a workshop on the application of molecular and bioinformatic analyses took place. The workshop comprised both theoretical and practical components.
The theoretical part of the workshop was held on November 28th, 2023, as a webinar, at which Dr. Dragan Milenković from the Department of Nutrition, University of California, Davis, U.S., acquainted students and attendees with the latest scientific advancements in nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics. Additionally, he discussed the effects of dietary polyphenols on vascular function and human health. Prof. Dr. Tatjana Ruškovska acquainted the attendees with the current research results, shedding light on the molecular mechanisms of positive effects of polyphenols on cardiometabolic health. Conducted in English, this theoretical segment of the workshop allowed active participation from international students at the Faculty of Medical Sciences within the Erasmus program, as well as those studying general medicine in English.
The practical part of the workshop took place in the Biochemical Laboratory of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the "Goce Delčev" University, Štip. A group of students familiarized themselves with selected bioinformatic methods and software tools for genomic data analysis presented by Prof. Dr. Tatjana Ruškovska. They also learned about the procedure for implementing the Comet method and its application in both science and practice, presented by Ass. Miško Milev.
The workshop was supported by the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the "Goce Delčev" University, Štip, and the student organizations, Faculty Student Parliament (FSP) of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and Student Organized Medical Association (SOMA).
