“Sound Paintings” Exhibition by Vladimir Martinovski

Vladimir Martinovski

From March 7th to March 30th, 2024, at the MKC Gallery in Skopje, professor and writer Vladimir Martinovski held his first solo exhibition titled "Sound Paintings." The exhibition showcased around 60 pieces in various techniques (digital graphics, acrylics on canvas, and watercolors on paper) unified around music. A significant portion of the exhibited works were created during concerts, particularly at the Skopje Jazz Festival. His artistic creations celebrate the process of creating music, aiming to visually represent a wide range of melodic and rhythmic patterns.

Martinovski, currently holding the position of Dean of the Faculty of Philology "Blaze Koneski" at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University is esteemed among colleagues and students alike for his multifaceted talents. He is recognized as a distinguished poet, storyteller, essayist, translator, musician, photographer, and painter. For Martinovski, art is inseparable from life, and just as there is rhythm in everything in life, so it is with art: everything pulsates with different rhythms, tempos, silences, pauses, and climactic points.

More than half of the collection, comprising 35 pieces, showcases prints of digital drawings. “In certain pieces”, he says “my intention was to emphasize vibrant hues, mirroring the melodic interplay of "colors and lines," while in others, I aimed to highlight the interplay between light and shadow, reflecting my belief that music can evoke contrasting sensations”. Additionally, the collection features works in mixed media: several paintings combine pencil, ink, and acrylic, while a series of 10 miniatures employs watercolor. Furthermore, there are several acrylics on canvas of various dimensions. Inspired by the playful spirit of jazz, many paintings evoke its dynamic energy, while others explore themes of trance found in dance, particularly traditional folk dances or the dervish dance.
